Someone burglarized the shelter on 35th Street some time between 3 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

Between $4,000 and $5,000 of heartworm, flea, tick and other medication was taken, said Assistant Director Linda Workman. Hundreds of dollars of cash donations, gift cards, adoption fees and a gas card are also missing.

Workman arrived at the shelter at 7:30 a.m. to discover that a safe had been dragged into the donation room.

“All of our donations, mostly storm-related, were gone,” she said.

A lockbox that contained around $100 in change from a lemonade stand three young girls set up last year to raise money for the shelter was also stolen.

No windows or doors showed signs of forced entry, Workman said. She believes that the burglar could be someone who is familiar with the facility. The Tuscaloosa Police Department is investigating the burglary.
