In our weekly countdown this time, we don’t mean to be dogmatic but Petco is the purr-fect place to go for all your pet-related needs.
Did you know that you can adopt a cat or small furry pet, get your pet vaccinated, take a dog training class, buy fish and aquarium supplies, check out a reptile, frog, or parakeet, and have your pet groomed all under one roof?
For dog training, they offer a six-week course for puppies and adult dogs. Classes are held generally in the evenings during the week and the mornings on Saturday.
Affordable vaccines such as rabies, lepto, lyme, bordetella, felv, and FVRCP as well as heartworm tests are generally administered the last Sunday of every month from 10am until noon. They also offer Home Again microchip pet ID’s.
Small pets can randomly show up in one of their adoption areas by the check-out counter such as birds, ferrets, chinchillas, hamsters, rats, and mostly guinea pigs, ready to be placed with the right owners. There are also animals available for purchase.
High-end cat condos are set up as you first walk in. And you have probably seen one of the hardworking volunteers from Last Hope Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation there feeding and taking care of these felines. Happily, there have been a lot of placements into loving homes.
You will be paw-sitively surprised by the tons of toys they have for all kinds of animals. There is even a collection of plush with La Maze in mind, appealing to your pet’s senses with the use of textures, shapes, colors, and of course the squeaky.
The full-service grooming area offers three packages with add-ons like de-shedding and spa extras that include aromatherapy shampoos and nail polish. Within this section, you can also use the self-service dog washing facility.
Towards the back of the store you will find a complete selection of health and wellness food brands. These are great choices for animals with allergies and health issues.
While standing in line about the make your purchase, for about a dollar or two, include a “Dinner and a Treat” which is a nicely wrapped small food item and toy for a pet in need. This will be distributed through the LI Cares Harry Chapin Food Bank in cooperation with the Animal Relief Fund. These organizations work to keep pets with their families and reduce the number of abandoned dogs and cats. You can also bring unopened pet food and drop it off in the bins located in the vestibule of the store.
There is always something going on at Petco, check here for the events calendar at the Syosset store and click on the month you are interested in, you will also find specific times. Occasionally they offer free puppy socialization seminars and meet-and-greets for adoptable cats and dogs.
