I am enjoying some time at a wonderful cottage, while hanging out with the inlaws, and a couple of most interesting dogs.
Chako is a small ( yet fierce) Chihuahua cross, who is loaded with energy and personality. He’ll take on anything, but sleep happily with the kids.
IF you peek in the kids room, he’ll GROWL as if to say back OFF or else.
Protective.
He has a thing about cutting his nails, but it appears his bark is worse than his bite.
Although his teeth are VERY sharp..
Hence the nickname ‘Land Shark’
He was acting unusual, licking his bum excessively, refusing to walk or go to the bathroom
I had a look at him, and could see a large, red swollen, area on the left side of his anus, at about 8’oclock
Any ideas?
If you said impacted Anal Gland, then you are right.
I was a little leery as to HOW he would react to having me treat him.
I donned a plastic bag in place of a glove
Added in some lubrication ( dish soap)
Had his owner Gary grip him firmly.
And with hardly a peep he let me squeeze both glands, even the impacted and abscessing left anal gland..
It’s almost as if he knew I was there to help him.
He was then given some Arnica, and some Aspirin, along with a HOT compress to loosen the impacted gland, as well as to keep it OPEN and draining.
He’ll have additional soaking and compressing of the gland, and I expect him to be close to normal in 48 hours.
My point in ALL of this is that animals continue to surprise me… and after dealing with family dynamics and the like, I sure wish that PEOPLE were more like pets 🙂
