This substance is found in many common products including sugar free chewing gum, candy, and baked goods. According to Animal Poison Control Center, cases of this poisoning are on the rise. In 2005, there were a total of 170 cases. This year, as of August, they have already managed 114 cases. It is believed that cases are increasing because more products are being sold with this substance. If you purchase items containing xylitol, it is very important to keep them out of reach from your dog.
This product can kill pets causing liver failure and blood clotting problems. Signs can be seen as soon as 30 minutes after ingestion. Even a small amount of this product can be quite harmful. It is critical if your pet has eaten a product containing this compound that you bring him/her to your veterinarian as soon as possible.
